Drain field

The underground area that filters wastewater from a septic tank.

In a septic system, liquid leaving the tank disperses into a 'drain field' (or leach field) where soil filters it naturally. It's the most expensive part to replace — often five figures — and it fails when a tank isn't pumped on schedule or when it's driven on or paved over. Routine pumping every few years protects it.
