Efflorescence

The white, chalky residue on masonry that signals water movement.

Efflorescence is the powdery white deposit that appears on concrete, brick, or basement walls when water moves through the masonry and leaves mineral salts behind as it evaporates. The residue itself is harmless, but it's a clue: it means water is getting into the material. Treat it as a signal to check grading, drainage, and your basement for moisture problems.
