Flashing

Thin metal that seals roof and wall joints against water.

Flashing is the thin metal (or membrane) installed wherever a roof meets a wall, chimney, vent, or valley. It directs water away from the seams that would otherwise leak. Most roof leaks aren't failed shingles — they're failed flashing. It's worth a look during any roof inspection.
